THROUGH SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION OF 9TH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 5 MELAYA

The purpose of this study is to improve students’ skills in writing procedure text using small group discussion strategies. The subjects of this study are 9th grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Melaya. This type of research is classroom action research. This research was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used were interviews, observations and writing tests. This research used qualitative and quantitative method. Quantitatively, the data was obtained from the students’ writing test scores. The results of the pre-test showed that the average student score was 60.46 where only 17% or 5 out of 30 students passed the KKM. In cycle I with an average score of 74.3 there were 21 or 70% of students who were successful. Whereas in cycle II the average score of students was 83 meaning 28 students or 93% had succeeded. Qualitatively, the data were taken from observation and interviews. Based on the results of data analysis, there was an increase in the scores of students’ writing skills and learning activities in each cycle and was reinforced by observations and interviews which showed the condition or situation of the class, such as students were more active and enthusiastic during the learning process. Small group discussions can increase student learning activities and improve students’ writing skills.
