Modifying the illocutionary force of an utterance is important to achieve a successfull communication. However, the previous studies in the last 5 years only analyzed the addition of lexical items in terms of analyzing hedging and boosting as a strategy of modifying illocutionary force. Thus, the objectives of this research were to find the strategy of modifying illocutionary force in written discourse and the purpose of it. To conduct the analysis, the researcher watched the video and read the live chats. The researcher found 192 live chats, in 1023 live chats, that contained linguistic devices that modify the illocutionary force. In 177 live chats that contained boosters, there were 132 live chats that used Typographical Device, 54 live chats that used Lexical Device, 2 live chats that used Discoursal Device, and no live chat that used Syntactical Device. In 15 chats that contained hedges, the researcher found 2 live chats that used Typographical Device, 1 live chat that used Lexical Device, 7 live chats that used Discoursal Device, and 5 live chats that used Syntactical Device. In terms of the purposes of modifying illocutionary force, the researcher found 26 chats that was used to express the users’ feeling, 94 chats that was used to users’ attitude about other, 1 chat that was used convey the user’s intention, 43 chats that was used to get someone to do something, and 25 chats that was used to provide information.
