This research aims to analyze the strategies for paraphrasing and identify the problems and
the causes of the problems faced by English Language Education students’ paraphrasing in
academic writing at I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar State Hindu University. The
researcher used a qualitative approach. In collecting the data, the researcher used a content
analysis and interview. The participants in this research were fourth-year English Language
Education Department students at I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa Denpasar State Hindu University.
The data analysis technique of this research were data reduction, data display, and
conclusion drawing/ verifying. This research showed that only six strategies used in
paraphrasing are using synonyms, changing word order, shortening phrases for
conciseness, changing the organization of ideas, changing parts of speech, and changing
active into passive. The most strategies used in paraphrasing was using synonyms. The
findings identified that the problems are word-for-word plagiarism, forgetting to document,
a patchwork paraphrase, including too much of the original, leaving out the important
information, misreading the original, and adding opinion. The most problem found in
paraphrasing was word-for-word plagiarism. The findings in the causes of the problems in
paraphrasing include a low reading comprehension, working in a second language, and
dealing with plagiarism practice. Besides, other researchers can continue this research on a
related topic and a deeper analyze strategies by investigating the students’ strategies in
paraphrasing academic writing.
