AND PONDERING (REAP) TECHNIQUE TO
IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING
COMPREHENSION AT SMA PGRI 4 DENPASAR

This study aims to describe the best implementation of REAP technique to improve
students’ reading comprehension. This study's subjects are the tenth-grade social
major at SMA PGRI 4 Denpasar. This type of research is classroom action research.
This research was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used were tests,
observations, and interviews. This research used Classroom Action Research
(CAR) method. The data was obtained from students of test scores. The pre-test
results showed that the average student score was 56,71; only 13 out of 34 students
passed the KKM. After REAP technique was applied in cycle I with an average of
63,24, there were 62% or 13 students of successful students. The condition did not
match the target. Whereas in cycle II several modification was applied including an
exploration in the pre-activity, students organizing, and blending between reading
and encoding. The result showed that the average score of students was 76, meaning
21 students improved by 20 points representing 100% of students had succeeded.
Also, the data were taken from observations and interviews. Based on the results of
data analysis, there was an increase in the scores of students’ reading
comprehension and learning activities in each cycle which was reinforced by
observations and interviews which showed the condition or situation of the class,
such as students were more active and enthusiastic during the learning process.
REAP technique can improve students’ reading comprehension by emphasizing
brainstorming prior, colaboration during its implementation.
