TAMBAYONG VIDEOS BEFORE AND AFTER STUDYING AT
HARVARD UNIVERSITY IN THE UNITED STATES

This study aimed to find the types of code-switching and the reasons of code-
switching found in Mikha Tambayong's five videos before and after studying at

Harvard University in the United States. The researcher started by downloading
videos on YouTube, transcribing texts, and analyzing content. The technique used
by the researcher to analyze data was condensation, divided into coding, patterning
codes, analytic memos, data displays, and conclusions. The results showed that
there were three types of code-switching found in Mikha Tambayong’s videos

before and after studying at Harvard University, such as intra-sentential, inter-
sentential, and tag switching. The three types of code-switching, Intra sentential

switching is the type most found in the videos before and after Mikha Tambayong
studied at Harvard university. Every code switching found in Mikha Tambayong’s
utterances in the five videos, seven reason of code switching found namely, Talking
About Certain Topic, Paraphrasing Someone Else, Being Empathetic, Using an
Interjection, Repetition Clarification, The Purpose to Make the Speech More
Understandable, and Conveying Group Identification, Repetition Clarification was
the most frequent reason of switching.
